Description

State of the art

In the area of laser marking used in a substantial amount of industries, currently nearly everything is done with 2D-galvanometer scanner systems. The original laser beam is typically expanded, then guided by two small mirrors, which are responsible for the positioning of the beam in a XY-plane on the processed part. In order to achieve an ablation/color change on the material, the beam is steered and focused through a specific F-Theta lens with a suitable focal length.

For a complete marking of barcodes, QR codes, or freely selectable inscription, the galvos have to steer the laser beam in an optimized trajectory over the entire surface that has to be marked on. Every dot of a QR code therefore has to be worked through in a sequential procedure.

scanner based marking

Depending on the marking size and complexity, individual requirements often become necessary for high-speed manufacturing lines: a part has to be scanned prior to the marking for the position it is in and the scan-solution in most cases needs to be able to mark on-the-fly.

The VULQ1 technology offers a unique high-speed marking performance with a wide range of advantages over conventional scanner-based QR-code markings:

  • faster - 10 to 100 codes per second
  • smarter - configurable codes by software, full flexibility
  • greener - no ink, no consumables and no chemicals required
  • safer - direct and permanent marking on any material

How is this done?

The patented multibeam technology generates up to hundreds of laser beamlets with a spatial resolution of <50 µm from a single beam, which can be dynamically controlled by a software. Each marking is done by a single pulse! This speeds up marking throughput by 5x to 10x.

Advantages and known applications:

  • individual traceability of every code/marking
  • maximum advantages on small parts
  • optimal in-line addition for fast moving/roll-to-roll part markings
  • anti-counterfeiting by 100 % unique codes on demand

Originally, the system is built for sectors in the industries of semiconductors, pharmaceutical and biomedical applications, food and beverage, luxury and glass markets. The demanding markets in the field of marking will open up more and potentially unexpected fields of use for this innovative solution.
